White Elephant Gift Christmas Party

For the first couple of weeks we will spend time getting to know one another, playing some games and meeting our leaders.

After that we break up into groups of same grade/same gender. In those groups we learn about life, one another, and especially God.

Small Groups are from 630pm - 8pm
But if you bring $3 at 6pm you can get some food.

Camp Monday Night

So we have been having so much fun at camp already. We played paintball today and it really left an impression on some of the students. In fact one student was so impressed she couldn't help but raise her chin to the idea of playing again (she got shot in the chin). Nobody, has been complaining that playing paintball is painful, in fact it's like a badge of honor. The funny part has been how many students won't surrender when a leader is three feet from them and they open fire on a leader. Man do JHers have guts, and thankfully leaders are reserved.

The night sessions and speaker have been great. DSM is the band leading worship, their name is "Do something meaningful." I hope that the students pick up on the idea.

The speaker talked about Identity tonight. Who we are in Christ. He shared a story about the Wemmicks and how they were labeled with a dot or star, however, when you found your identity in Eli the creator, the labels fell off. So we handed each student a label and told them to write the labels that others place on them as well as the labels they place on themselves. They were asked to keep it and hold it till wed when we have them let it go.

So, you could be praying that students are honest with their labels, but that in being honest they find that their creator is the only person they need to find their identity in.

Hey there all. Just a note that there will be NO, that's right I said "NO," after service program on Saturday Night. That means...JH will hang out in the modular on Saturday night from 6-7pm. We are doing this because of Change in Motion. We know that a lot of students will be at Change in Motion and it ends at 5pm. We will then begin the process of opening up the modular to hang out. We don't want to inundate them with too much info, so we are just going to hang out.

Saturday Night JH is from 6 - 7pm This week only.

From 5pm this coming Friday (Feb 27) till 5pm this Saturday (Feb 28) we will be having an all nighter type event. Students will come and live the life of a Child in Africa/Cambodia. Children who have nothing. We will eat what they eat, sleep how they sleep, learn some of their language, and just have a good time getting outside of our self and into the shoes of someone else. I have found this website Common Sense Media to be pretty useful. It gives you a lot of useful information about Video games, movies, TV Shows, etc... It has a whole section dedicated to parent advice. From what I know about them they are not a "Christian" organization, but I did think that their beliefs about censorship and media were pretty good. Here they are:

Ten Common Sense Beliefs

* We believe in media sanity, not censorship.
* We believe that media has truly become "the other parent" in our kids' lives, powerfully affecting their mental, physical, and social development.
* We believe in teaching our kids to be savvy media interpreters -- we can’t cover their eyes but we can teach them to see.
* We believe parents should have a choice and a voice about the media our kids consume. Every family is different but all need information.
* We believe that the price for free and open media is a bit of extra homework for families. Parents need to know about media content and need to manage media use.
* We believe that through informed decision making, we can improve the media landscape one decision at a time.
* We believe appropriate regulations about right time, right place, and right manner exist. They need to be upheld by our elected and appointed leaders.

Dear Parents of Junior High Students, January 2009

One of our major focuses is to create a safe place where Junior Highers can connect with one another, learn, and explore what it means to be a Christian. As we work to make this goal a reality, we have been finding that students have a hard time connecting with each other on Sunday mornings and have been searching for alternative ways to bring our students together. Finally, after a long period of planning and prayer, we are excited to inform you of the amazing, new things we have in store for the Junior Highers, coming...

February 14, 2009 @ 6:00p.m.

Our first and most drastic change is our new Saturday night service. After asking around, we discovered that parents would like their students to have a safe place to spend a Saturday night, so we are going to deliver just that! Starting February 14, we will be offering a Junior High service from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., of which the ultimate goal will be to encourage students to come together, make lasting relationships with each other, our staff team and God and just have a lot of fun. To provide you with a brief breakdown, 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. will be a student worship service where they will learn Biblical truths, worship, and connect with leaders. Then, 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., our main goal will be building community with each other through games, hang out time and fun. We are also planning movie nights, large group game nights, and other various events that your student won't want to miss!

Adding our new Saturday night service also means some changes for our Sunday morning routine. We will be eliminating both our 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Junior High services with high hopes that offering only one student service at 10:00 a.m. will allow your Junior Higher the opportunity to connect with the entire church family in a more tangible, effective manner. One of our desires is that the students will choose to serve one of the many ministries at Parkcrest on a Sunday morning by volunteering and truly putting their faith into action!

We understand that some of you will have questions regarding our upcoming changes, and we gladly welcome them! Also, we will be going into more detail of our new and exciting path in our

Parent Meeting on January 11 @ 1:00 p.m. in the 300 modular.

Parents are encouraged to attend and bring all of your questions to the floor as we lay out what the future of the Junior High Ministry looks like. Thank you so much for allowing us to love your students and be involved in your lives!

WHITE ELEPHANT

Hey next wed night we are doing our annual white elephant Christmas party. A white elephant is something that you have laying around the house that is not trash, but is something that you don't use or want anymore. You will need to wrap your white elephant and bring it along with you. Make sure you ask your parents if you can give it away first.

Ideas:
1. An old barbie or GI Joe
2. A lawn gnome, or other statue.
3. A video game system like the OG Nintendo gameboy
4. A movie you don't watch anymore.maybe a VHS

6. A flashlight you don't use that has no batteries

Hey everyone out there in blog land. This is Amy checking in with a mid-week blog. If you haven't been to The Verb in the last week or two, then you haven't heard the news yet... I know that it may come as a little bit of a surprise, but tonight is my last Wednesday night and this weekend is my last weekend with student ministries, as I have recently accepted a children's minister position with the KidZone.

I've been working in student ministries for almost 6 years now, and I never imagined loving Jr. High ministry like I do. There are so many things that I have learned from working with Scott Schlatter (Who just so happens to be one of the BEST jr. high ministers around!) and with our team of fabulous volunteers and with you. I've had the opportunity to make so many amazing memories and seen your lives change that, if I am honest, it makes moving on rather emotional for me. As it turns out, I'm pretty attached to you jr. highers because I have grown to deeply love each you in our ministry!

But please know that I am not going far... in fact my main focus in the KidZone will be the 4th and 5th graders, so I'll be just a modular away! And no matter what my title is, I am still here for you! You will still see me around on Sunday and Wednesday and you have permission to call me or e-mail me anytime about anything. So please, please, please keep in touch. (And don't hate me for leaving you for your little brothers and sisters either!) :)

Thanks for making my experience in Jr. High ministry so wonderful. I love you guys and gals more than you know!

PS: A special thanks to Scott Schlatter for believing in me and really cultivating my gifts and talents... and especially for seeing my love for Jr. Highers before I did. :) And thank you to jr. high parents out there for trusting me with your kids and allowing me to be a part of their lives.

Into the Topic:
As a family go outside and play a game of freeze tag.
- Was there anyone of you who you couldn't get away from?
- What was it like to try and out run your kids?
- What was it like to try and out run your parents?
- Do you think that trying to run from God is anything like that?

As a family have each person do their best impression of a senior pastor. Then take turns judging them on how good they were.

Into the Word:
God asked Jonah to do things that he didn't want to do.
- What is something that you are afraid of?
- If you were asked to do it what excuses would you give to not do it?
In Jonah's mind he had a good reason for not wanting to go to Nineveh.
- What are some things in the bible that seem unreasonable or difficult to follow?
- What are the "good reasons" we give to run from those things?

Jonah was judgmental about the people he was supposed to go to and share the Gospel with.
- When was the last time you were judged? (a boss at work, a teacher at school, a friend, maybe someone in your family)
- How does it feel when we are judged?
God wants all people to be forgiven and yet like Jonah we all have Ninevites that we judge.

- What is one step you can take to be obedient to God this week?

- How can you stop being judgmental?

How To Use The Family Talks

2. As Parents you must be the first to open up and share honest answers.

3. As Parents read through it before you take your family through it. Add or
subtract questions that you feel work for your family.

4. Don't set a time for completion. If it only takes 15min or 1hour, it's all
worth it.

5. Make sure you don't have anything to be at right after otherwise you'll
constantly be worried about the clock.

Hey there all you wonderful campers. I wanted to remind you of a couple things.

First... We leave THIS Sunday.
730am from the Unplugged Parking Lot

Second... I know it says no Ipods, or Electronic games etc...however, you may bring them and use them on the bus, so long as you understand that you can't use them at camp. If you do, I will own them. Also, you are responsible if they get stolen at camp. I will leave it up to you.

Third...You will need to bring the following.
Clothes for the week,(see dress code below)
Light jacket or sweatshirt
A hat to keep the sun off
Sunscreen
Sleeping Bag
Pillow
Toiletries (shower stuff, deodorant preferably not axe spray on)
Flashlight

Serve Day

This Saturday is Serve Day, and one of your volunteer staff, Cheryle Darley, is heading up a beach cleaning project, if you're interested. Here is the info from Cheryl:

This is a letter I sent out to people who have signed up to participate in a project that my family is heading-up for the annual Serve Day. I wanted to give you all a heads up in hopes that you might want to participate! It is this Saturday morning, we start at 8:00 a.m. and are done at 9:00 a.m. - we are going to hit the beach 'hard and fast' and leave it much better than we found it! For more information and to sign up to serve just go to http://serveday.org/, click on the yellow 'Go Serve' arrow, click the down arrow in the white box and select Long Beach, cursor down and click on Project #42 or 43 and sign up. Please come if you can - I'm looking forward to seeing as many of you and your family members as possible on Saturday!

Hey, everyone! Our Serve Day opportunity is just a few days away and I am so excited to see what the Lord has in store for us! I have finalized all of the particulars with the City of Long Beach - we will meet at at Granada Avenue and Ocean Boulevard, in Long Beach, 90803 - copy the following link for mapquest directions: http://www.mapquest.com/mq/5-7u7E5E2KVZdotioIdLDV . This location affords the use of a parking lot - I am working on free parking, however, bring quarters to feed the meter (.25 cents for every 15 mins. or $1 per hour and I always buy some extra time as a buffer for any unexpected happenings that eat up time and would result in a $40 ticket!), just in case I am unable get the parking fees waived. ***F.Y.I.: It's A Grind (the unofficial coffee house of Parkcrest), Peet's, Starbucks and Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf are all located just a few blocks up from the beach on Second Street. You can find the exact locations on the same mapquest map mentioned above, just cursor down and click on the purple coffee icon and it will show you exactly where they are - Wow, technology is awesome! (most of the time, ha-ha)

The City of Long Beach, Parks and Recreation Dept. has provided plastic bags and gloves, however, in an effort to leave the smallest carbon footprint behind as we leave the beach, I want to challenge everyone to 'think out of the bag". Typically, plastic bags are used for litter collection so, in a effort to further the cause of being ecologically friendly, the fewer bags we leave behind the better! So, in keeping with that thought I am asking everyone to try to bring their own reusable container. Possible suitable containers would include: sand buckets (especially for the little ones who are joining us), car wash buckets, garden buckets, paint buckets, washable cloth grocery/store bags, beach/sand toy bags, etc., be creative!

Wear comfortable clothing, UV protective clothing is the best (rash guards are great, especially for the little ones), or wear your Serve Day shirt if you purchased one.

Please pray for all of us who will be participating in this service project - that our actions show the community the love of Jesus Christ.

Alright 8th graders participating in the Final 24... don't forget we're meeting at the Jr. High modular at 8pm Friday (tomorrow!!!) and we'll be done at 2pm Saturday. Bring a sleeping bag and pillow and any toiletries you might need for the new day to freshen up. (Do us all a favor and at least bring some breath mints and deodorant, haha, thanks.) Should be a fun time!

I also want to say WAY TO GO small group girls... you did a great job with decorating Scott's office, and he loved it. You can see his office and read about his reaction here.

Summer is Coming Quick!

Summer time is coming quick and I was just looking at the camps that we have going on. I have to say that I am so excited for the HS ministry to go to Hume SD. I know that they are going to have a blast. I also am really excited for Aaron and the HS staff that are going to get to hang out with all the 8th graders that are going. I can’t believe that almost half the spots were filled with 8th graders. That rocks!

Anyways here is HS camp info:

HUME SAN DIEGO

WHEN: JUNE 29th to JULY 4th

WHERE: Point Loma Nazarene College - which is awesome I might add.

FOR: any student entering 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grade.

COST: $350 - a $75 non-refundable deposit will add you to the wait list, because as of right now we are full.

THINGS TO DO: Surf, Skate, Hang out at the beach, Air soft, Enjoy the presence of God, Get away from the family and much much more.

Now I have to say, I am equally excited for the Junior Highers. I know that UCYC is awesome and I always look forward to hanging out with some of the craziest people I know (If you haven’t figured out who this is, it’s probably you). Oh yeah, and I love the 9 hours it takes to get there.

I can’t wait. I know that my summer is going to be busy, but I also know that God is going to do incredible things. All I have to do is get out of His way and allow him to use me as well as all the other leaders going to and at camp.

Camp - Aug 3rd to 8th - $340

Hey there Summer camp is just around the corner and so we wanted to give you all some information.

We the Junior High will be going to UCYC in Prescott, AZ. We will travel by Charter bus. They have paint ball, a rock wall, a zip line, a leap of faith, mountain bikes, canoes, rock climbing & rappelling, and geocaching. Not to mention the worship rocks, the speaker every year has been incredible, the time you get to spend getting to know other students in not only our own group but Knott Ave. Christian Church as well. It is truly a life changing week.

Now I know $340 sounds like a lot, but when you break it down that is only...$56 a day for food, travel, lodging, and there is no extra cost for great memories. The only extra cost is approx $20 for food on the way there and on the way home.

A $75 non-refundable deposit is due by June 15th.
